Open letter to President-elect Obama

I just posted this to Obama’s change.org website, but I think it bears saying out loud where others can see it:

While the economy and the continuing (economically ruinous) war in Iraq are among most people’s top concerns, I’m worried that smaller concerns will be lost in the shuffle. The passage of Proposition 8 in California on election night signals that bigotry in this country is far from dead, and that a large number of people are quite happy to rob their fellow Americans of freedom even as our soldiers fight for freedom in a foreign land. I hope your administration will work not only to fix structural problems in our country, but also to return freedoms we have lost since 9/11 and to guarantee equal freedoms for ALL Americans regardless of race, gender, or sexual preference.
