Remembering the true meaning of the 4th of July

…all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security….

It’s a shame so many “patriotic” Americans have forgotten this. The abuses an usurpations of the past several years (post-9/11/2001) are a mockery of what we supposedly celebrate today. But then, how many people can actually recite any part of the Declaration of Independance outside of “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” and “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”? I couldn’t. So I took it upon myself to go read the whole great document.
