Tasers are torture

I’ve been anti-taser for a long time now. You only have to read a few news reports of people dying from being tasered, and see a couple YouTube videos of how quickly police will resort to using these “non-lethal weapons” to come to that opinion. Now the UN shares my opinion. They have declared that “TASER electronic stun guns are a form of torture that can kill”. Of course, the word of the UN is worth less than a double-mocha latte grande here in the USA, but I still hope that some day we will discontinue the use of tasers, or at least stop calling them non-lethal weapons. I mean, how many people have to die before we call them lethal? There have been 17 deaths in Canada following the use of Tasers since they were approved for use, and 275 deaths in the US.

It certainly seems that police officers are using tasers more frequently — sometimes almost sadistically.

But before we toss the baby out with the bath water we should consider that for every non-deserving “Grandma” and college student who gets tasered for no good reason, there are probably 50 ‘bad guys’ who really need to be subdued somehow. Without a taser, Officer Billy Bob will have to revert to his 357 Magnum or a night stick and I’m guessing given those options, everyone involved would prefer the taser to a bullet in the head or bashed in brain matter…

Ah, billy-clubs… Never heard anybody call a billy-club a “non-lethal weapon”. It seems to me that police are more willing to resort to a taser than they were to resort to a billy-club, and (it seems to me) there are more taser deaths per year than there were billy-club deaths. Also, the police can direct a billy-club to non-life-threatening targets, such as an arm or a leg. When you shoot someone with a taser, you’re going for center-mass, which means the heart and the central nervous system are going to get it, every time. I’d much rather be clubbed into submission than tasered (and not just because I’m used to getting clubbed in the SCA). Either train police to treat the taser as a lethal weapon, or take the damned toy away.
