Why are we killing our pets?

Melamine, the chemical substance found in pet food that is believed to be responsible for pet illnesses and deaths this year, is found to be “routinely added to animal feed as a fake protein” in China.

The laws in China are like that, aren’t they? If there’s no accident, there won’t be any regulation.

Sadly, the laws are typically like that here too. Otherwise we’d have been inspecting the food we import from China before pets started dying. But that’s not the way things work. Our capitalistic urges demand that we buy whatever’s cheapest (even from a communist country, which is hugely ironic) regardless of quality, and respond to any problems when and if they are discovered. This is the ugly side of capitalism. Turn a buck at any cost, so long as the cost is somebody else’s. Why buy wheat locally (and support capitalism) when we can import it from a communist country for cheaper? And then give government subsidies (communism) to local farmers. Is this making any sense to anybody yet? “Growers of corn, wheat (yeah, this stuff we’re importing from China that’s killing our pets!), cotton, soybeans, and rice receive more than 90 percent of all farm subsidies.”
