Penguicon is here

And so am I. Signed up a short while ago, and checked into my room at the Troy Hilton. The (scheduled) fun starts in about an hour, when I have to choose between an “LJ” (and other social networking) meet’n’greet or a Bruce Schneier panel on Security and Psychology. Then it’s Opening Ceremonies, then another choice between a Worm Quartet concert and an intro to Python. After a short pseudo-mandatory break, there’s a Chaos Machine presentation conflicting with the Chocolate Ritual, conflicting with the beginning of Ars Till Dawn, which runs, as the name suggests, until the wee hours of the morning. Somewhere in there I need to squeeze in a dinner, and a good bit of beer and caffeine. Also starting around 11 is an open singing circle, which I will probably drift towards when/if Ars gets boring.

And Saturday is when most of the stuff happens… Yikes! Busy weekend.

If you chose WQ over Python, don’t worry. There were issues getting the presenter’s laptop talking to the hotel’s projector, and the thing was basically canceled. I think a few people stuck around and got a more personal discussion, but the presentation fell through and I ended up heading over to WQ late.

How was Bruce’s presentation? I wasn’t going to drive like a madman just to get here in time.

Bruce’s first panel was great. A lot of very thought-provoking stuff about psychology and how people think. Or don’t. For example, he talked about an experiment where two groups of people were asked the same mathematical question, but with one group the question was phrased positively and for the other group it was phrased negatively, and the percentages of who chose what were almost completely opposite between the two.
He said the presentation is on his website, if you want to go find it.
As for Python vs WQ, I chose Charlie’s Crab instead (GOOD dinner!)
